  • — LinkedIn’s Applications Further Moves the Intranet Away from the Firewall

       (Wednesday, 29 October 2008 01:31)

Although I don’t have any kids of my own yet, but I’m sure my kids won’t know what a firewall is when they reach the workplace.

Why? firewalls, the enterprise security that maintains security between employees and the public on your intranet are going to be irrelevant –and LinkedIn and other SaaS products are making this happen –one URL at a time. I’ve expanded upon this a bit more in a recent discussion with the WSJ indicating the opportunity for LinkedIn and others.

I’ve been in close contact with LinkedIn over the past year, and recently had lunch with their CEO to discuss their strategy, so I’ve been fully briefed on this platform announcement. Given the downturn in economy, this is a great market for LinkedIn to grow with users, and to offer services and features that reduce developer cost within the enterprise.

A bit of history, LinkedIn, which is reported to have 29million users, was one of the OpenSocial partners that agreed to join the coalition and put their name by it in fall 2007, finally, a year later they’ve finally launched an application platform with 10 application partners. You’ve heard of MySpace,...

  • — Dropcard: business cards 2.0?

       (Friday, 19 September 2008 12:16)

DropcardLast night after the Mobilize conference, I had a great time meeting attendees from all over. Andy Abramson was one of those and we spent a good fifteen minutes talking mobile tech. Andy lives such a mobile lifestyle that it was awesome to discuss new tools he's using. When he asked me if I had heard of Dropcard, I had to say no; it hadn't hit my radar yet. Turns out it was such a timely service to discuss because I had collected and handed out hundreds of business cards, which I'm just not a fan off. You get all these cards and have to use a tool or *gasp* manually enter all of your new contacts. What if you could avoid that all together?

Dropcard is a service that essentially eliminates the need for paper business cards between people that have text-message capable mobile phones. In other words: for basically everyone. ;) Here's what happened last night. Instead of handing me a business card, or asking for mine, Andy asked me for my e-mail address. I gave him my work e-mail which he added to his BlackBerry.

    About a minute...

  • — 10 Reasons Your Business Needs a Website

       (Sunday, 07 September 2008 18:00)

Contributed by Hanh Brown of Investers Lounge Online

One of the first questions business people ask is "do I need a website?" The answer to this is a resounding, yes. Absolutely. Even if you think your business is too small, too obscure, or something frivolous you don't think will or can be sold online, you are mistaken.

Everything and anything can be sold over the Internet. There are 20+ million online shoppers these days, buying everything from computers to vi [...]

  • — Disqus Takes Commenting to the Next Level

Our Joomla! Commenting Plugins rocks, but we are waiting for the JoomlaWorks update with the much needed
    Feature: Select Category!
    Check here for updates: http://forum.joomlaworks.gr/index.php?board=42.0
Over the last few months, no blogging comments engine has received as much attention, or gained as much perceived blogger momentum as has Disqus. While alternatives exist, Disqus' clean interface, tracking capabilities and the team's aggressive approach to customer support have begun to make them the alternative to standard blogging comment engines from Blogger, Wordpress and TypePad. As I previously documented, moving to Disqus has greatly improved the interactivity between me and my readers over the last few months, and I remain extremely optimistic about the company's ability to gain market share.

As many other sites have now reported, Disqus rolled out version 2 of their software today, addressing some concerns held by holdouts who believed implementing the engine would hurt their SEO rankings, while also delivering strong platform integration with Wordpress, a new developer API, and a significant reorganization of Disqus.com to deliver immediate access to an individual's comments to track and manage.

  • — Using Web 2.0 in the Workplace

       (Thursday, 04 September 2008 16:14)

I'm scheduled to speak to an entire room-full of CIO-types of major corporations in Dallas in September about this very subject. My goal is to show them why these technologies are important, and share some technologies they can use to have more control within their own organization.

Shel Holtz has put together a 30-minute video about moving Web 2.0 tools into the enterprise. I've embedded his video below. The video is pretty long but it's worth a watch to get the basics on using tools including blogs, podcasting and social networking within large companies. I tried for years to get a corporation to embrace these tools, it's very hard to get a large company to embrace change. Especially when the corporate culture is locked into large, enterprise-level, long-term contract packages.

Shel misses a few key points:

    • One of the biggest reasons companies aren't using Web 2.0 tools externally is because legal teams hold installation and execution back due to fear of litigation or revealing private company secrets to the public
    • Large companies aren't embracing these tools yet because the platforms they have selected aren't setup to handle Web 2.0 tools yet - it's easy to assume (as Shel does)...
